Saucony UK, a long-term client of Brandnation’s Sports PR agency team, has signed a sponsorship deal with iconic British runner and five-time Olympian, Jo Pavey.
The new partnership will see Pavey compete as part of the Saucony UK Hurricane Team for the remainder of 2018, sporting the latest Saucony kit and supporting the brand at events, races and product launches. The 2014 European Champion is targeting success on both the track and the roads this year.
The deal evokes fond memories for Pavey, who 20 years ago trained solely in a pair of Saucony's on the famous six-month backpacking adventure that kick-started her international running career, following years of injury problems.
One of the most successful runners in British history, Pavey continues to inspire the running community with her relentless drive to achieve her goals while juggling family life with full-time training.
While she is yet to decide on whether she will target her sixth Olympic Games at Tokyo in 2020, Pavey has her sights firmly set on competing in many big races on the roads and the track, with Saucony playing a big part in her journey, just as they did at the start of her career.
Back in 1996, following a number of injuries, Pavey went backpacking with the secret motive of returning to running while away. With limited space she could only take one pair of trainers to last the full six months of training, and she chose to pack a pair of Saucony's. The shoes held up well, Pavey was injury free for the first time in years and upon her return to the UK she made her first ever major championships at the 1997 World Championships in Athens.
Twenty years on, Pavey is excited to see how the brand can aid her once more: “Now I’m a busy middle aged mum but I have a better balance in life.
“I’m much more chilled out, in fact I’m probably more like I was when I was backpacking, free spirited and it feels like I have done a full circle. Just like when I was travelling, I’m wearing Saucony running shoes and heading out and exploring where my running takes me.”
Pavey will wear the brand’s best-selling Ride 10 shoes. The athlete’s racing and travelling experience provides invaluable messaging in line with Saucony’s #RUNYOURWORLD campaign, which encourages all runners to showcase their running world.
Of the partnership, Pavey added: “I’ve had a long career and have focused on looking after my body with careful analysis of training, good nutrition, regular massage and stretching.
“I have also become very selective about what I put on my feet. With the amount of years I’ve been competing I have amassed so much experience regarding what feels right for optimal performance and for this reason I’m very excited to be partnering with Saucony.
“I was very impressed when testing the shoes as they provide the perfect balance of flexibility and support. Looking after my feet is one of the most valuable things I’ve learned over the years. Getting the right shoe is so important to enable the feet to function properly.”
Saucony Hurricane Team Manager, Nick Hardy said: “At Saucony UK we’re delighted to have someone of Jo’s calibre join the team and feel that she completely encompasses the brand messages. “Jo’s fun, varied lifestyle represents our ‘Run Your World’ philosophy perfectly and she’ll help us to pass this message onto a wider audience whilst providing valuable experience to the Saucony Hurricane Racing Team.”
