Brandnation’s Sports PR agency team partnered up with running brand Saucony and five-time Olympian, Jo Pavey, to create an all access ‘day in the life’ running experience in Devon with the running legend.
Why Devon is an ideal training location
Born and bred in the Devon countryside, Jo Pavey is one of the UK’s most decorated distance runners ever. Not only has she competed at five consecutive Olympic Games, she is a European champion from 2014 and a global medallist.
Like many of the UK’s finest runners, for over 10 years she lived and trained in Teddington, a picturesque town on the outskirts of London. Shortly after the birth of her first child, Pavey moved back to the coast and East Devon to be close to her family and train in an equally beautiful part of the world. Here hills are commonplace and coastal paths a long-run must do.
Now targeting a sixth Olympic Games, we were offered a taste of her current training environment.
Following the success of last year’s trail running adventure in the Lake District, where journalists were challenged to trial all of Saucony’s Run Anywhere collection, Brandnation this time went one step further, by offering an all-encompassing multi-surface experiential. The event was centred around offering an access all areas education into the life of a pro athlete as well as supporting the launch of the new Saucony Guide ISO 2 and Triumph ISO 5 trainers.
While she may now enjoy access to some of the most scenic run routes in the UK, Pavey’s fame comes as a result of her success on the orange coloured oval that is the running track. With this in mind it was here that we started our adventure.
Guided by Pavey and her husband and coach Gavin, four leading journalists from publications including the Telegraph and The I, were given a masterclass in pre-session stretches and drills before being put through their paces in a gruelling track session. First came a test of speed endurance with 2 X 1000m before it was time to turn on the fast twitch muscles and take on 6 X 400m and 3 X 200m. The end result, track 1 – journalists 0.
As a reward for their hard work, the group then took a trip to the idyllic setting of The Pig at Combe, one of the couple’s favourite dinning locations, for a three-course meal in an Elizabethan manor house.
The next morning, with everyone’s legs suitably refreshed, it was time for a breakfast trail run along the coast of Sidmouth. Offered a delicious concoction of hills with a side of mud, the group spent six miles climbing and cruising down the trails with only the sea and fresh air for company as Jo pointed out some of her favourite haunts. Once back at the car park, it was time to delve into sausage and bacon sandwiches before capping off the adventure with some more dynamic drills.
The trip allowed Brandnation’s Sports PR agency team and Saucony to showcase the launch of the brand’s latest shoes and illustrate their relationship with one of the nation’s favourite runners. Across the course of the event the journalists tested trail, road and racing shoes - learning the value of each product in a runner’s training process.
